The Spirit Bear Rebellion

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Spirit Bear RebellionYesterday evening there was an envelope waiting for me on the dining room table from BeatnikPressDigital. I knew it contained the brand new Spirit Bear Rebellion CD that Bull Lee contributed a song to earlier this month (it’s called “I Can’t Love You After 8” and was premiered on Episode 82 of The Bull Pit Podcast where I also interviewed our guest vocalist Edie Lustie who performed on the song).

Bull Lee has been on a handful of compilations and most of them suck pretty bad. I put the thing on today while driving in the rain to work with low expectations as usual, and I must say, I’m very pleasantly surprised.  I like every song out of the nine I’ve heard so far.

Bands on the disc are Zoe Vette and The Revolvers, John Sinclair & His International Blues Scholars, FIREBRANDS, Grown Up Avenger Stuff, Nervous Nellie, Fontaine, Non-Divine, Mikiruka, Grey Revell, Steve Rich and a mystery track.

All profits from the comp go to the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition who is working hard to save the Spirit Bear, “a genetically unique subspecies of the black bear unique only to Canada’s west coast – numbers fewer than 400, possibly fewer than 200.” The bear “plays a critical role, because of its color, within the nutrient cycle that upholds one of the largest land carbon sinks in the world.”

You may think that saving this rare white bear (not a polar bear) isn’t the most pressing issue facing our world today, but there is more to it. The organization has aspirations to “create a new paradigm between ecology and economics that will meet everyone’s bottom line.” I like that kind of thinking because if improving life on this doomed planet can prove to be profitable to those who have the real power to make a difference, perhaps we aren’t so doomed after all.

So kudos to Lee Estes from BeatnikPressDigital, Zoe and all the other artists who helped put this thing together (and special thanks to Edie for layin down one of the sexiest rock vocals I’ve ever heard).
