New BULL LEE Single, w/Special Guest Singer Zoe Vette, Now on iTunes

Hot_Coals_sm

The new Bull Lee single, “Hot Coals (featuring Zoe Vette)” showed up on iTunes today. Here are some notes written for the song’s CD Baby page:

The slow hemorrhaging of LA’s female-fronted punks Bull Lee began in March of 2008 when the band’s co-founder, bassist and lyricist BC Furtney left town to pursue greener pastures (he wrote and directed New Terminal Hotel, an indie noir starring Stephen Geoffreys of Fright Night fame, Core Haim and scream queen Tiffany Shepis later that year; and his recently-completed first novel, the pulp and blood-drenched SCARLA, is about to drop).

Despite many attempts to stop the bleeding, guitarist John Dissed lost the battle to keep the band alive as one by one, the rest of the members followed in BC’s footsteps, leaving LA and forcing Dissed to focus on sharpening his singer-songwriting skills.

Two years later, while downing cold Coronas in Austin, TX , John and BC decided to roll out some of their favorite unrecorded BL songs (there are over 30 to choose from), with guest vocalists.

The most obvious first choice was Zoe Vette from Charlotte, NC rockers Zoe Vette and the Revolvers. Dissed had interviewed Zoe in September of ’09 on his weekly rock podcast, The Bull Pit, and she was instantly recognized by the songwriting duo as an ideal voice for a song.

The result is more collision than collaboration. “Hot Coals” is a melding of 70s glam, NY punk and classic rock in the vein of The Runaways. Vintage KISS comes to mind from the opening drums, and the dirt in these grooves could resurrect The Dead Boys.

Download the song on iTunes here for only $0.99. Album art and skull logo by Mike Dyson, Guerrilla808 Studios (guerrilla808@gmail.com). From Bull Lee Records in collaboration with Beatnik Press Digital.

The Big 0-3: Three Years of Cover Me

THEBIG03-400x400

Ray from the Cover Me blog emailed me a few weeks ago asking if I’d like to participate in a birthday covers compilation to commemerate the blog’s 3rd birthday. Nothing could have made me say no, especially after I decided on a song: “Happy Birthday” by Concrete Blonde.

We contacted a bunch of artists we’ve worked with in the past – terrifically talented folk who have all played a role in Cover Me’s history. We asked them to record birthday-themed cover songs for a special three-year celebration album. Find the fruits of their labor below. Eleven brand-new covers of birthday songs both famous (“It’s My Party”) and obscure (“Birthday Boy”), all recorded just for the occasion.

Download all the songs, or individual tracks (for free), here.
